iZTech Tip
Ever notice strange errors on your VGA monitor when you start up your RADAR? Messages such as, "CMOS Checksum Error", "NTLDR is Missing" and "System boot failure" are all prime indicators that your CMOS battery has lost it's charge.
The CMOS battery (or motherboard battery) is responsible for powering the real-time clock circuitry that is responsible for the storage of the CMOS settings in the motherboard's BIOS setup.
If the battery no longer supplies power, your RADAR will not display the correct system date and time, and may exhibit the above described symptoms as well as not outputting time code correctly, and other problems related to the Sync Processor board.
Luckily, the shelf life for the CMOS battery is around 10 years (so this problem most often occurs with older RADAR systems), and it can easily be fixed by simply replacing the battery and reconfiguring a few CMOS settings.
For a complete walkthrough of the battery replacement procedure please read this document: RADAR 24 and V Motherboard Battery Replacment Procedure.
Once installed, you can follow this document: RADAR Motherboard CMOS Setup for the reconfiguration of your particular system motherboard.

Interview - Roger Monk
 |
Recently iZ had the opportunity to visit with Roger Monk owner of Dick & Rogers. |
iZ: Roger, first tell us about yourself... what you've done, where you've been etc. Whatever information you want to share.
Roger: I have been recording music since 1971.
When I started at Eastern Sound Studios in Toronto it was the first 24 track analogue studio in Canada.
I came out west in the mid 70's and was one of the early pioneers of recording to picture with video tape - locking 3/4 video tape to Studer A 80's with dreadful and unreliable synchronizers.
I have used analogue tape, digital PD and PCM tape formats and now directly to disk.
I built my own digital post studios in 1990. This was to take advantage of the developing use of computers to record and manipulate audio.
I still record orchestral music for motion pictures, television and ceremonial occasions, and operate my post studios.
iZ: Describe your studio - what equipment you have, and what you specialize in?
Roger: Dick & Roger's Sound Studio is a full service facility, but specializes in sound for animation.
Located in the historic area of downtown Vancouver, the studio has rooms for recording assembling and editing and two mix theatres with Neve Digital Film Consoles.
Our engineers are seasoned and experienced, and recognized by many industry awards.
iZ: When did you first come in contact with RADAR systems?
Roger: RADAR was being developed just a few miles from Vancouver and so I was aware of RADAR from its early days.
I was not requiring a recorder for music tracks, and at that time the accepted format for delivery mixed program stems was DA88 tape,
however as technology progressed it became possible and desirable to deliver professional product in a file format. RADAR certainly met that need.
iZ: Why do you like RADAR?
Roger: RADAR is a reliable solution. Easy to use and it sounds very good. Some computer based disk recording systems simply cannot deal with all the mathematics and result in a lack of resolution, air and clarity.
This has noting to do with converters, it is that actual manipulation of the audio data during recording and playback.
RADAR does not have this issue, and the audio retains all of its sonic qualities.
We are using it in 48 / 24 bit mode which are the professional audio delivery specs and can simply "export" the mixed stems via FTP or burned to DVD-R or Blu-ray.
RADAR locks to time code efficiently.
Archiving and restoring is reliable and fast. We have chosen to use the REV drive method.
Thank you Roger for taking the time to show us around your studio, giving us a little insight
into your work and how you use RADAR.
