August 21, 2014, Vancouver, Canada – iZ Technology is proud to announce that the world’s most advanced digital recorder, the new iZ RADAR 6, has been selected as the recorder of choice for one of the world’s most renowned, classic analogue recording studios. Recently restored to its pristine, vintage-analogue operating status, the new Sun Studio chose to make only one digital exception: every sound created at the Memphis-based, historic Studio of the Kings, will be faithfully recorded and reproduced, with stunning transparency and dynamics, by the latest version of the beloved, and trusted, iZ RADAR recording system.

Says Barry Henderson, President, iZ Technology Corporation: “The new Sun Studio is a faithful recreation of the past, reminding us of all that is good about the rock ’n’ roll industry and its heroes who passed through Sun’s doors on their way to the stars.

RADAR 6 extends that same spirit, energy, and devotion to excellence, delivering the very best of today’s technology, while serving, in the restored Sun model, as a powerful bridge between the best of the old and the best of the new.”

Sun Studio, home to the early recordings of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis, has returned to its roots, while tapping into the cutting-edge development of the RADAR 6. The Tec Award–winning iZ RADAR has long been known for its world-class converters, creating a sound that is increasingly both sought out and embraced by today’s top hit-makers. By comparison to any format, digital or analogue, RADAR sounds great, and has earned its prominent place in the new Sun Studio.

Head engineer for Sun Studio, Matt Ross-Spang, says: “I’m at a loss for words – integrating the RADAR has really been the greatest decision I’ve ever made for the studio. Hands down. RADAR is a performance-based machine, and it is the backbone of every session. For me, not only does it sound incredible compared to anything I’ve ever heard, but it also works perfectly with my workflow. I think that anyone who likes to make music and is creative will love RADAR, because it helps them become better at what they do.”

RADAR systems are already the premier choice for multi-track recording and playback in some of the finest recording studios, scoring stages, theatres, and post-production houses around the world. iZ Technology considers it an honour to be chosen by Sun Studio, known for its dedication to excellence through the preservation of “analogue sound.”

Matt refers to RADAR as a type of social media, because RADAR allows artists and engineers to focus on the music and the performance. Creativity can be lost when watching waveforms, tweaking plug-ins, dealing with computer crashes, and forever installing updates.

Matt continues, “Everything I like to do in life, whether it’s writing a song, playing guitar, or engineering, it’s all social. I like to do it with other people. I like when people can feed off each other. All these licks, lyrics, and ideas start coming out, and that’s how I like to record as well – playing together as a single unit and catching that special take. Everyone knows it’s the take when they’re done and they run into the control room to hear it. Sam Phillips [producer and founder of Sun Studio] used to call it “perfect imperfection.” He didn’t want to go for the most perfectly played take – he wanted the one that made you feel something, even if there was a booger somewhere in there.”

Sun Studio is one of the few studios that is also a historic landmark. Holding tours during the day and recording sessions every night, they also produce a TV show, “Sun Studio Sessions,” where up-and-coming bands can record live to RADAR.

Matt concludes, “For the musicians who record at Sun Studio, I think it’s a relief for them not to see a computer. They can focus more on getting a great performance take. They don’t know that RADAR can do edits like other DAWs so they focus more on playing. RADAR is the only thing out there that makes you a better engineer or musician. It’s like this room at Sun Studio, a room that will make you a better musician when you play together and practise playing dynamically.”

About Sun Studio

In 1950 Sam C. Phillips opened Sun Studio at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, TN., recording such Blues legends as Ike Turner, Howling Wolf, B.B. King, Little Milton, James Cotton, Rufus Thomas and Rosco Gordon, just to name a few. In 1951 he recorded arguably the first Rock n’ Roll record, “Rocket 88”, by Jackie Brenston and the Delta Cats. Then in ‘53 a young 18 year old truck driver named Elvis Presley came through Sun’s doors, resulting in Elvis’ early singles. After selling Elvis’ contract to RCA, Sam was able to fund the national distribution of his label, Sun Records. The rest may “be history” as they say, but it is certainly worthy of note that Sam and “Sun” went on to discover and produce such stellar talent as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Rich. Since reopening in 1986, the studio has recorded such formidable acts as Ringo Starr, U2, Jakob Dylan, Mark Ronson and Grace Potter. For more information, please visit www.sunstudio.com.
